Montego Bay (MoBay) is Jamaica’s tourist capital, a city of 110,000 with one of the Caribbean’s busiest cruise terminals and the country’s main international airport. The things to do in Montego Bay center on its beach strip and its role as a base for excursions across the island. Doctor’s Cave Beach on the Hip Strip is the most famous beach: an enclosed cove with calm, clear water, named for the physician who donated the beach to the public in 1906. The Montego Bay Marine Park protects the coral reef around the bay; snorkel tours operate daily. The Hip Strip (Gloucester Avenue) is the concentrated tourist entertainment zone: bars, jerk chicken stands, duty-free shops, and live music venues. The Rose Hall Great House, a colonial mansion with a reportedly haunted history (the legend of Annie Palmer, the ‘White Witch of Rose Hall’), is 15 km east and offers candlelit evening tours. YS Falls, 90 minutes southeast, is a series of seven tiered waterfalls with rope swings and swimming holes — considered more beautiful than Dunn’s River Falls by some visitors. The Appleton Estate rum distillery, 2 hours south, is Jamaica’s finest distillery and offers comprehensive tours through the rum production process and estate history (dating to 1749).

Best time to visit

December through April is the dry season and peak tourist season, with the best beach weather. The Christmas-New Year period is the most expensive and crowded. The Reggae Sumfest (July) is Jamaica’s premier music festival, held at Catherine Hall in Montego Bay — one of the Caribbean’s largest and most celebrated reggae and dancehall events. May-June is the shoulder season with lower prices and manageable rain (mostly afternoon showers).

Getting around

Sangster International Airport is 3 km from the Hip Strip, with direct flights from major US, UK, and Canadian cities. Within Montego Bay, taxis and JUTA licensed taxis serve the main tourist routes. Uber is not officially operational but informal ride-sharing exists. Resort transfer buses connect to major hotels. For excursions to Negril (90 minutes), Ocho Rios (2 hours), and Kingston (2.5 hours), tour buses, private taxis, or rental cars serve the routes. The north coast highway is the main road.

Frequently asked questions

Is Montego Bay safe for tourists?

The resort zone (Doctor's Cave Beach area, Hip Strip, major hotels) is maintained with reasonable safety for tourists. However, Montego Bay has serious gang-related crime in non-tourist areas (the West End, Flankers). Don't walk to non-tourist areas at night; use licensed taxis from your hotel. The Jamaican Tourist Board and individual hotels provide specific safety guidance. The US State Department rates St. James Parish (where Montego Bay is located) at a higher risk level than some other areas of Jamaica.
