Auckland Harbour Bridge Climb

You are clipped into a harness 52 metres above the Waitematā Harbour, the cables of the Auckland Harbour Bridge humming around you, and the entire city laid out below — sky tower punctuating the skyline, the Hauraki Gulf glittering to the east, the Waitakere Ranges dark green to the west. The Auckland Harbour Bridge Climb is one of New Zealand's great urban adventures, placing you on the exterior arch of an 8-lane road bridge while wind tugs at your jumpsuit and container ships slide silently beneath your feet.

History of Auckland Harbour Bridge

Auckland Harbour Bridge New Zealand iconic structure waterfront

Auckland Harbour Bridge opened in 1959, connecting the CBD with the North Shore suburbs and ending the reliance on a single ferry service that had been the only crossing for decades. The original four-lane bridge was designed by Freeman Fox and Partners of London and built at a cost of approximately £10 million. Within a decade of opening it was already struggling to cope with Auckland's rapid post-war suburban expansion, and in 1969 two additional lanes were bolted onto each side of the bridge by a Japanese construction company — an addition Auckland'ers nicknamed the “Nippon clip-ons.”

Today the bridge carries eight lanes of traffic and is one of Auckland's most recognisable landmarks, visible from much of the waterfront and harbour. The climb operation was established by AJ Hackett — the same company that pioneered commercial bungee jumping — and the bridge has also become the city's iconic bungee jumping site. The structure spans 1,020 metres across the Waitematā Harbour and rises to a peak of 64 metres above the water at its highest arch point.

What to See on the Climb

The guided climb takes small groups across the exterior of the bridge's arch, reaching the summit 52 metres above the harbour. From this vantage point the views extend across all of Auckland — the volcanic cones of Rangitoto Island and One Tree Hill are clearly visible, the CBD skyline glitters to the south, and on clear days the hills of the Coromandel Peninsula appear on the eastern horizon. The climb takes approximately 1.5 hours and is led by experienced guides who provide commentary on the bridge's construction, history, and the city spreading in every direction.

Participants are provided with overalls, safety harness, and helmet, and are clipped to the bridge structure at all times. The experience is accessible to a wide range of fitness levels — there are stairs, but the pace is relaxed and rest stops are built in. Night climbs and sunrise climbs offer dramatically different lighting conditions and a completely different character to the daytime experience.

Bridge Bungee and Additional Activities

The Auckland Harbour Bridge is also home to Auckland Bridge Climb's sister activity — bridge bungee jumping, operated by AJ Hackett from the same base at Curran Street. The jump platform sits 40 metres above the harbour, and the free-fall experience has been running since 1994. Combining the bridge climb with a bungee jump (or vice versa) makes for an extraordinary full adventure day, and packages combining both are available.

The base of the operation at Curran Street in Herne Bay is itself a waterfront destination. The area around the bridge base includes walking paths along the harbour, views of the Waitematā Harbour, and easy access to Westhaven Marina — the largest marina in the Southern Hemisphere. Kayak rentals and stand-up paddleboard hire are available from operators near the base.

Local Insights

What locals know that guidebooks do not always tell you:

  • The sunset climb is magical but books faster than any other timeslot — reserve it as early as possible, especially in summer.
  • Personal items (phones, cameras, bags) cannot be taken on the climb itself for safety reasons. AJ Hackett provides a professional photographer service — the images are good quality and worth considering.
  • Lightweight closed-toe shoes and form-fitting clothing work best under the overalls. Avoid bulky jackets as they make the harness fitting awkward.
  • The climb is run in all but the most extreme weather — Auckland's notorious rain often clears quickly, and cloud-filtered light over the harbour can be spectacular.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early as the pre-climb briefing and gear fitting takes time; arriving late may mean missing your group's start.

Getting There

  • Address: 105 Curran Street, Westhaven Reserve, Herne Bay — just north of the bridge base on the city side.
  • Bus: Multiple Auckland Transport routes to Westhaven Drive or Curran Street; check AT.govt.nz for current routes.
  • On foot: Approximately 25–30 minutes walk north along the waterfront from Viaduct Harbour.
  • Car/Rideshare: Limited parking at Westhaven Reserve; Uber and taxis are practical options. Ask for “AJ Hackett Bridge Climb, Curran Street.”
  • Ferry: Bayswater and Devonport ferries pass under the bridge; the base is visible from the water but not accessible from the ferry terminal without a 10–minute walk.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum age and weight requirement for the Auckland Bridge Climb?

Children as young as 7 can participate with a guardian. There are weight limits and harness-fitting requirements; check the current requirements at bungy.co.nz or call the operator directly before booking.

Can I take photos during the climb?

Personal cameras and phones are not permitted on the bridge structure for safety reasons. AJ Hackett's professional photographers accompany each climb and photos and video packages can be purchased after.

Is the climb affected by weather?

The climb operates in most weather including light rain. It may be paused or cancelled in high winds or lightning. You will be notified in advance if conditions require rescheduling and offered an alternative time or refund.

Is the Auckland Harbour Bridge Climb accessible for those with a fear of heights?

Many participants complete the climb despite a fear of heights — the guide-to-participant ratio is good and guides are trained to support nervous climbers. You are clipped to the bridge structure at all times. That said, the experience places you high above the harbour and is not suitable for those with severe acrophobia.

What other attractions are near the bridge?

Westhaven Marina and the waterfront walkway are immediately adjacent. Ponsonby — Auckland's most fashionable dining and bar precinct — is 15 minutes walk south. Viaduct Harbour and the CBD waterfront are 30 minutes walk along the water.
