Venice Beach
Venice Beach is Los Angeles at its most colourful, chaotic, and captivating. Stretching along a 3-kilometre oceanfront boardwalk in the beach community of Venice, this legendary destination is part funfair, part art gallery, part fitness club, and part carnival, all played out against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean and year-round California sunshine. Since the 1950s, Venice Beach has been a magnet for counterculture, creativity, and anyone who likes their beach experience served with a side of spectacle.

The Boardwalk
The heart of Venice Beach is Ocean Front Walk, the famous pedestrian boardwalk that runs parallel to the shore. Here, street performers juggle and breathe fire, tarot card readers set up folding tables, artists sell paintings and prints, and vendors hawk everything from sunglasses to souvenirs. Bodybuilders pump iron at the legendary Muscle Beach outdoor gym, skaters carve through the dedicated skate plaza, and basketball players command the famous courts that spawned generations of Los Angeles hoops legends. The energy is relentless and exhilarating.

Abbot Kinney Boulevard
Just a few blocks from the ocean, Abbot Kinney Boulevard offers a more refined side of Venice. Named after the eccentric developer who built this area as a replica of Venice, Italy, complete with canals, in the early 1900s, the boulevard today hosts independent boutiques, acclaimed restaurants, craft cocktail bars, and galleries of an active artistic community. It has been named one of the coolest streets in America.

The Venice Canals
Part of Abbot Kinney original Venice, Italy-inspired canal system survives intact just a few blocks from the beach. The Venice Canals are a charming residential neighbourhood where houseboats and colourful homes line peaceful waterways crossed by wooden bridges. Ducks glide between paddleboats, and the quiet ambience feels utterly removed from the boardwalk chaos nearby. Walking the canal pathways is one of the best-kept secrets of a Venice Beach visit.
Tips for Visitors
- Visit on a Sunday for the most vibrant boardwalk atmosphere
- Bring cash for boardwalk vendors who may not accept cards
- Parking is extremely limited; arrive early or use ride-share
- The beach itself is excellent for swimming, but watch for rip currents
- Sunset from the beach is magnificent, stay for the golden hour

Getting There
Venice Beach is located in the coastal community of Venice, approximately 30 kilometres west of downtown Los Angeles. By public transport, take the Metro E Line (Expo) to Culver City or Santa Monica, then the Big Blue Bus route 3 to Venice. Uber and Lyft are widely used. Driving is possible but parking is scarce and expensive on weekends; many visitors park further away in Santa Monica and cycle or walk along the beach path to Venice.
