Shufen Yayun Teahouse (Shufeng Yayun)
The Shufen Yayun Teahouse (Shufeng Yayun) at 132 Qintai Road in Chengdu’s Qingyang District is one of the city’s most celebrated venues for traditional Sichuan opera — and a genuine cultural institution rather than a tourist performance package. Set within a classical garden compound that evokes old Chengdu’s leisurely tea culture, the teahouse has been performing Sichuan opera and folk arts for local audiences since the early Republican era.
Performances typically run in the evening and include an extraordinary range of traditional arts: face-changing (bianlian), fire-breathing, shadow puppetry, clapper opera singing, and acrobatics, all woven into a program that introduces audiences to a performing tradition with roots stretching back over 300 years. Afternoon sessions offer a more relaxed experience of traditional tea service alongside shorter folk music performances. The teahouse fills quickly on weekends, and reservations are strongly recommended. Unlike slick tourist dinner-show productions, Shufeng Yayun retains a slightly informal, community-hall character that adds authenticity to the experience — the audience sips tea, cracks melon seeds, and reacts with genuine appreciation. Qintai Road itself, a pedestrianized cultural boulevard dedicated to Sichuan’s artistic heritage, is worth strolling before or after the performance.
