Monarto Zoo

Monarto Safari Park — now rebranded as Monarto Safari Park under Zoos SA — sits about 65 kilometres east of Adelaide and ranks among the largest open-range zoos in the world, spreading across more than 1,500 hectares of pristine mallee scrubland. Home to over 500 animals representing more than 50 species, it offers close encounters with African lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, rhinos, giraffes, and a vast herd of zebra roaming open plains.

Guided safari bus tours weave through the property, getting visitors remarkably close to animals in naturalistic habitats — a very different experience from traditional zoo enclosures. Conservation is central to Monarto's mission: the park runs internationally recognised breeding programmes for endangered species including the southern white rhinoceros. A dedicated Lion Loop walk and an immersive cheetah experience add excitement for those wanting premium access. Allow at least half a day; a full day passes quickly here.
